13 Fun Things to Do in Irvine with Kids (Even Toddlers)

I used to work in Irvine as a software engineer, driving in every single weekday for almost 7 years. And honestly? I had no idea how much there was to do here for kids.

Back then, I wasn’t thinking about playgrounds, train rides, or whether a place had a toddler-friendly bathroom. I was just trying to get to the office on time and beat traffic on the 405. If you’d told me I’d be back monthly for bounce houses and frog statues, I probably would’ve laughed.

Now? Irvine has become one of our go-to spots for weekend adventures. With two toddlers in tow, I’ve discovered a whole new side of this city—and I’m kind of obsessed. Whether we need an indoor play day, an easy stroller-friendly outing, or just somewhere to let them run wild, Irvine delivers.

Here are our tried-and-true favorite things to do in Irvine with toddlers and little kids.

Traveling with kids isn’t always easy, but these tools help a ton.

Fun Things to Do in Irvine with Toddlers and Little Kids

🏆 My Top 5 Kid-Friendly Spots in Irvine

Here’s a quick roundup of our favorite kid-approved spots in Irvine:

  • 🧸 Pretend City: Indoor kids’ museum where toddlers can shop, splash, paint, and play pretend in a mini city.
  • 🎠 Irvine Spectrum Center: Carousel, climbing web, grassy lawn, and tons of food options—an easy half-day outing.
  • 🚂 Irvine Regional Park: Seasonal events, train rides, pony rides, zoo, paddle boats, and more.
  • 🎈 Great Park: Free carousel, balloon ride, adventure playground, and weekend inflatables.
  • 🍕 Woodbridge Village Center: Chill food spot with a built-in play area and space for kids to run.

Pretend City Children’s Museum

📍 Address: 29 Hubble, Irvine, CA 92618
🕒 Hours: Wed–Sun 10am–4pm (closed Mon/Tues, open Tues in summer)
💲 Cost: $22 for ages 1+, free for under 1
🌐 Website: pretendcity.org

Pretend City is one of our all-time favorite places to spend a few hours indoors. It’s a miniature city built just for kids—designed to let little ones explore grown-up roles in a hands-on, totally imaginative way. We’ve been coming here since my oldest was a toddler, and it’s still a hit every time we go.

What my kids love most:

  • Filling tiny shopping carts at the mini Trader Joe’s
  • Digging in the sand at the beach and splashing in the water toys at the marina area
  • Doing the art projects and sensory bin activity in the art studio (these change every single day!)
  • Playing doctor, firefighter, farmer—you name it!

Why I recommend it to other parents: Parking is free and easy, the whole place is enclosed, and there are plenty of parent-friendly touches (nursing room, snack area, kid-sized toilets).

Parent Tip: Plan on 2–3 hours, and bring snacks. There’s a café space with tables and microwaves for breaks.

👉 Check out my full Pretend City Irvine Review for insider tips. We’ve been members for 2 years, and with 2 toddlers, let’s just say—we’ve been a lot. I’ve got all the details on what to pack, what things to do, and how to make the most of your visit.

Irvine Spectrum Center

📍 Address: 670 Spectrum Center Dr, Irvine, CA 92618
🕒 Hours: Sun–Thurs 10am–9pm, Fri–Sat 10am–10pm
💲 Cost: Free to visit, attractions vary
🌐 Website: irvinespectrumcenter.com

This outdoor shopping and dining center doubles as one of our go-to spots for toddler entertainment. Between the grass area in front of the giant Ferris wheel and the climbing web structure, my kids could stay here all day. There’s a carousel, an arcade at Dave & Buster’s, and lots of family-friendly restaurants.

What my kids love most:

  • Climbing on the lily pad-style Spectrum Climber
  • Spinning on the carousel
  • Running wild on the grassy lawn
  • Pressing buttons and lights at Dave & Buster’s (they think they’re playing, shhh!)

Why I recommend it to other parents: It’s spacious, clean, and has plenty of good food options to satisfy picky toddlers and tired parents alike. Also, there is a shaded parking structure, and parking is free! This already beats Anaheim Gardenwalk and Anaheim Packing House, plus there’s way more space and more variety.

Irvine Regional Park

📍 Address: 1 Irvine Park Rd, Orange, CA 92869
🕒 Hours: 6am–6pm (Fall/Winter); 6am–9pm (Spring/Summer)
💲 Cost: Free entry. Parking is $3 weekdays, $5 weekends, or $7 holidays.
🌐 Website: irvineparkrailroad.com

This park is massive, and there is always something going on. We’ve been here for the Pumpkin Patch in October and Santa’s Village in December, and each time was pure toddler joy.

Irvine Park Railroad

🕒 Hours: 10am–4pm (Fall/Winter); 10am–5pm weekdays, 10am–6pm weekends (Spring/Summer)

💰 Deal: Free train rides every Wednesday if you wear Irvine Park Railroad gear (shirt, crewneck, or logo hat).

A relaxing, scenic train ride through the trees that’s perfect for all ages. My toddlers get giddy just hearing the whistle.

Seasonal Activities (Pumpkin Patch, Santa’s Village, Easter Eggstravaganza)

🕒 Hours: Typically 10am–6pm weekdays, 8am–6pm weekends during events
💲 Cost: Seasonal events are usually free to enter, but for the first time, Pumpkin Patch weekends in Oct 2025 require a $20 reservation per person (includes entry + train ride). Activities inside cost 1–2 tickets each ($8 per ticket or $100 for 15 tickets).
🌐 Website: irvineparkrailroad.com/events

Carnival games, bounce houses, face painting, cookie decorating, hay rides, and moreeach activity typically requires 1–2 tickets per person ($8 Per Ticket or $100 Book of 15 Tickets ($20 Savings)). This is where most of our money disappears whenever we visit—but the kids are all smiles and we get a lot of great pics, so we keep coming back.

Tip for Pumpkin Patch: Reservations are now required for seasonal weekends like the Pumpkin Patch because it gets packed. If you can swing a weekday visit, it’s cheaper, way less crowded, and way more enjoyable.

What my kids love most:

  • Bouncing in the bounce house
  • Playing the carnival games (and winning a huge alien!)
  • Riding the train
  • Saying hi to animals at the zoo

Why I recommend it to other parents: There’s something for every season, and it’s a great mix of nature and festive fun.

We love this huge, wide-open space for its free and low-cost activities. There’s always something to explore.

  • Climbing on the Kids Rock Playground

This tethered balloon ride goes straight up and down, offering amazing views without drifting away like a hot air balloon. My nieces (ages 4 and 6 at the time) loved it. The gentle ride was just enough thrill without being scary.

How to Get Around Irvine With Kids

Irvine is clean, spacious, and super family-friendly — but also very spread out. You’ll definitely want a car to get between parks, restaurants, and attractions. Public transit technically exists, but even local families don’t use it with young kids.

Here are the options for families:

🚗 Drive or Rent a Car (Most Flexible)

Best for: Families planning to explore all of Orange County, including beaches, LA, or attractions outside Anaheim.

  • Most flexible way to get around
  • Keep car seats in the car – no need to haul them around while you explore
  • Parking: Almost always free at parks, restaurants, and shopping centers
  • Brings freedom to travel on your own schedule

💡 Pro Tip: Use DiscoverCars to compare rental options with filter for family vehicles and car seats.

🚖 Rideshares (Uber & Lyft)

  • Available throughout Irvine, and easy for quick trips or date nights.
  • Great for airport transfers or quick errands
  • Con: You’ll need to bring your own car seats if riding with toddlers

💡 Pro Tip: Download both Uber and Lyft—sometimes one is cheaper depending on surge pricing (busy times).

🚌 Public Transportation (OC Bus)

Best for: Families on a tight budget without small kids.

  • Cost: $2 one-way, $5 day pass
  • Free for kids 5 and under
  • Not ideal for families: long routes, transfers, and folded strollers required

💡 Tip: Download the OC Bus app for routes and passes.
