Irvine Park Railroad Review 2025: Is It Worth Visiting With Kids?

If you’re a parent planning a fun day out in Orange County with toddlers or young kids, Irvine Park Railroad might already be on your radar. Between the train rides, seasonal events, and nature-filled surroundings, it has a lot going for it. But is it worth the drive and cost?

As a local mom who’s been to Irvine Regional Park at least five times now (including back-to-back Pumpkin Patch field trips), I’ve gotten a good feel for what this spot offers. Let’s break it all down so you can decide if it’s the right fit for your family in 2025.

My Honest Review: Is the Irvine Park Railroad Worth It for Families?

I’ve been to Irvine Regional Park at least five times now, and the train ride is something we’ve never skipped. We’ve done it during seasonal events like the Pumpkin Patch, and also on regular weekends just for fun.

So here’s my real mom take: It’s a must-do.

The train ride itself is peaceful and scenic, with enough going on to keep little ones interested — trees, bridges, grassy meadows, the occasional peacock sighting. My daughter especially loves the tunnel section, which gets festive upgrades during holidays.

It’s short enough that you’re not stuck too long if someone gets wiggly, but long enough to feel like an actual experience. The staff are always friendly, the trains are clean, and the whole thing is easy to access with a stroller.

Even when we’ve done other activities at the park (like the zoo or bike rentals), the train has always been a highlight. It’s simple, sweet, and totally toddler-approved.

Seasonal Activities at Irvine Park Railroad

Most of the fun stuff at these seasonal events like games, crafts, and bounce houses cost tickets.

You can buy tickets individually, but if your kids (especially if you have multiple kids) want to do a few things (mine always do), the 15-ticket bundle for $100 is the better deal (saves $20), and it never expires.

Weekends 10am–6pm (kitchen closes at 5pm)

Food menu includes:

  • Burgers
  • Hot dogs
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Grilled cheese
  • Quesadillas
  • Fries (regular, cheese, or chili cheese)
  • Popcorn, chips, candy, trail mix, and ice cream

This is more like a walk-up window than a full restaurants. I’ve grabbed food here before and honestly, it’s just okay. If your kids are hangry, it’ll do the job. But if you have time to plan ahead, I recommend eating before or after your visit somewhere else nearby. The kettle corn is probably my favorite thing here.

Picnic Spots Nearby

Benches near the bathroom and hay maze are perfect for families bringing their own snacks. You’ll be glad you packed some when hunger hits in between rides.

What to Expect on Your Visit to Irvine Park Railroad with Kids

Parking

Parking Fees:

  • Weekdays: $3
  • Weekends: $5
  • Holidays: $7

Entry to Irvine Park Railroad is free on weekdays and September weekends unless you’re attending a special event like the Pumpkin Patch on October weekends.

Crowds

October and December are the busiest times. There’s only one road into the park, so delays can happen, and on a busy day, you can be waiting 30 minutes to an hour just to get into the parking lot. Parking can fill up fast in October and December.

I personally experienced a really long car line on a weekday in October 2024. During the Pumpkin Patch (busiest time at Irvine Park Railroad), overflow parking will be available at Santiago Canyon College, which is about a half-mile walk away.

Ticket Bundle

  • Never expires — I bought one in October 2024 and used leftover tickets in 2025.
  • Usable for: Train rides, carnival games, and Irvine Park Railroad activities.
  • Not valid for: Pony rides, the zoo, or special Christmas Train tickets.

FAQ: Visiting Irvine Park Railroad as a Family

Yes, but only for October weekends during Pumpkin Patch season. Everything else, like weekday visits or Santa’s Village on weekdays, is free entry without a reservation.

Train rides cost $8 per person (babies under 12 months ride free). Seasonal events use the same tickets — $8 per activity, or $100 for a 15-ticket bundle (you save $20). The exception to this is the Christmas train, which requires its own separate tickets purchased online.

For 2025:
Weekdays: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Weekends: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Weekend reservations are required in October. Weekdays and September weekends are free to enter.

Yes. The train is ideal for toddlers — short, smooth, and easy to board. Pony rides are gentle and led by handlers, but only for kids who can sit up independently (no babies).

They host family-favorite events throughout the year:

  • Pumpkin Patch (Sept–Oct)
  • Santa’s Village (Dec)
  • Easter Eggstravaganza (Spring)
Each offers themed games, decorations, and activities made for little kids.

Beyond seasonal events, kids can ride the train, enjoy pony rides, play near the hay maze, and take photos at themed backdrops. It’s toddler friendly and stroller accessible.

Sign up for their email list at irvineparkrailroad.com/coupons and you’ll usually get a welcome email with coupons like:

  • Buy-one-get-one train rides
  • $5 off paddle boat rentals
  • $10 off bike rentals
  • Discounts on snacks
  • BOGO OC Zoo tickets

Tanaka Farms gives you that classic pumpkin field experience, with real crops and U-pick options, but it’s pricier and more spread out.

Irvine Park Railroad is more budget friendly and compact, especially good for toddlers. Even with the $25 October weekend reservation, it’s often cheaper and easier overall.

Yes, if you’re there for the seasonal events. There are so many cute photo ops and themed backdrops that you can enjoy for free — it’s a fun outing even without spending on activities.

That said, the train ride is still my favorite part, and it does cost 1 ticket.

If you’re visiting with kids, just be ready — it’s tough to say no when they see the games, bounce houses, or train going by. Personally, I always plan to get at least a few tickets whenever we go.

Final Thoughts: Irvine Park Railroad with Kids in 2025

If you’re looking for something festive, nature-filled, and toddler-friendly without heading too far from home, Irvine Park Railroad is still a favorite. Whether you’re visiting for the Pumpkin Patch, Santa’s Village, or just hopping on the train and stopping by the zoo, there’s always something going on.

I recommend going during the week whenever possible to avoid the crowds and get the most value. And once you buy a ticket bundle, you’ll probably find yourself coming back again anyway.

No matter the season, it always feels like a good mix of calm and fun — and you can make it as low-key or packed as you want.
